Radiation Oncology Department
Vision
The Radiation Oncology Department fights against cancer and prevents cancer with patients and relatives, seeking hope and health for everyone.
History
Shuang Ho Hospital established the Radiation Oncology Department in February 2009. Located on B2 covering an area of 400 pings, the department is designed bearing health, safety and barrier-free in mind. Fresh air is introduced and circulated in the whole department and positive pressure air conditioner is used to maintain the healthy environment. The wide aisle in the department is convenient for patients on sick beds or in wheelchairs.

The staff in the department include Chief of Radiation Oncology Department Doctor Jo-Ting Tsai, Doctor Ming-Hsien Li , Doctor Jang-Chun Lin, Doctor Yu-Jen Wang, Doctor Yi-Chieh Tsai and two Residents. Besides the abovementioned doctors who have quite a lot of clinical experiences, there are also five medical physicists, nine radiologists, four registered nurses, one project manager, one department secretary and two general affairs staff. The department emphasizes on patient care from multiple departments. For each newly diagnosed cancer patient, the most appropriate care is provided after the doctors have discussed in multiple department meetings.

The department applies high-accuracy, high-efficiency and low-harm advanced radiotherapy. Therefore, Image-guided Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Tomotherapy, Gamma Knife and Intracavity Brachytherapy were introduced and used in the department from the very beginning. For that, our department is the largest and most equipped Radiation Therapy Center in New Taipei City. As the department pays extra attention to patients’ holistic nursing care, the Spiritual Care Center was established in March 2011. Care and psychological support are provided to cancer patients and relatives from volunteers and staff who are especially trained by the department.

Along with the progress in cancer treatment researches, tumors can be controlled more accurately and the harm to normal tissues is greatly reduced. The department will hold its initial intention since the establishment to introduce new treatment technologies to help the patients. Under the industry-academic cooperation with Taipei Medical University, the department is moving towards the goal of becoming an excellent cancer treatment center.
Main featured medical treatment services of the Radiation Oncology Department:
The Radiation Oncology Department provides medical care to inpatients and outpatients with various radiation therapies. We hold meetings with doctors from multiple departments and work with chemotherapy to provide customized anti-cancer treatment for patients in Zhonghe and Yonghe Districts as well as patients in the Taipei area. The department organizes health education promotion activities regularly to allow patients and the general public to be aware of the means to prevent cancer, the care given during treatment and the follow-up conduct after treatment. We are aiming to provide patient-centered, high-quality comprehensive safe medical treatment services.
Service goal and position:
1. Medical Features: High-tech Comprehensive Radiation Therapy Center
    (1)High-tech and High-precision Radiation Therapy Equipment The department bears “Providing High-tech and Professional Humanized Services” in mind and introduces the world’s leading treatment technology. Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and Computerized Treatment Planning System show the shape of the tumor and its relative position to surrounding organs in 3D. The treatment area is more precisely determined and the harm in normal tissues is reduced. Moreover, the high-efficiency treatment speed greatly reduces the overall treatment time and decreases the discomfort and side effects caused by the treatment. Patients have more hope and confidence to recover and be healthy again. With TomoTherapy, the 360-degree delivery pattern distributes more accurate and even treatment dosage and significantly reduces the radiation dosage in normal tissues neighboring the tumor. The longest treatment length of 160cm offers integrative treatment to large tumors and reduces the number of treatment days. With CT simulation technique, a low-radiation CT scan is conducted before each radiation therapy session to identify the location of the targeted tumor and the best patient position is automatically adjusted for high-precision and low-harm treatment. The treatment area of Remote After-Loading brachytherapy includes the esophagus, head and neck, cervix, endometrium, prostate and nasopharynx.

    (2)Cancer Team Cooperation Shuang Ho Hospital currently has 12 Cancer Teams for which the members include relative internal medicine doctors, surgeons and staff from Radiation Oncology Department, Department of Radiology, Department of Pathology and Department of Nuclear Medicine. Joint discussions are held regularly. The cancers concerned by the cancer teams cover hematology and oncology, gynecologic cancers, urinary tract tumor, hepatic cancer, colorectal cancer, esophagus cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, neuro-oncology and head and neck cancer.
    (3)Spiritual Care Center The Spiritual Care Center provides psychological support to cancer patients and relatives by listening to and accompanying them to relieve their anxiety during radiation therapy. Spiritual care activity sessions are organized irregularly to relieve the patients’ and relatives’ spiritual stress. Obligatory volunteers are arranged and assigned regularly to greet and cheer up the patients with hope to reduce their anxiety and enhance their connection with family and society. In view of cancer patients’ spiritual needs, the Spiritual Care Center was established on March 29, 2011. A series of spiritual care activity sessions have been organized for cancer patients, hospital staffs and volunteers before and after the Center was founded. Volunteers are especially recruited and trained to accompany the cancer patients. Aim: To protect community health and promote the body, mind and spiritual balance for community residents.

Medical Treatment Features:
     1. Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) X 2 Model Type: ELEKTA Synergy/1893 First day of use: April 27, 2009, April 12, 2011 Provide 3D radiation therapy in 2D and 3D images, Intensity modulated radiation therapy, Image-guided radiation therapy and Volumetric modulated arc radiation therapy with two photon energy regions and five electric energy regions. Suitable for tumors in all body parts.

     2. Gamma Knife Model Type: ELEKTA LEKSELL GAMMA KNIFE PERFEXION/6075 First day of use: February 11, 2010 A total of 192 Co-60 radioactive sources are distributed evenly in the Gamma Knife. The collimators allow the beam focus sizes to be adjusted from 4mm, 8mm to 16mm. Suitable for small brain tumors and functional lesions. Usually used for single session, it is the classic treatment machine for radiosurgery in the brain.

     3. TomoTherapy Model Type: Hi-art system/0210313 First day of use: February 11, 2010
With CT imaging, automatic patient position adjustment and a 360-degree delivery pattern, the irradiation comes from 51 angles. The photon energy is 6 million volts. Suitable for total body irradiation, with the longest treatment length being 160cm. For special radiation therapy considered to be highly difficult or result in multiple side effects, e.g. Total Marrow Irradiation, the radiation dose can be evenly distributed on the bone marrow to greatly reduce overall radiation doses in other organs and shorten the treatment process while improving patient’s quality of life and increasing the success rate of follow-up bone marrow transplantation.

     4. Brachytherapy Model Type: (Mallinckrodt Medical B.V. Microselectron/D36C2872) First day of use: August 6, 2010 Contains an Ir-192 radioactive source. Suitable for intracavitary treatment and interstitial implantation. Work with external radiation therapy to intensify the dose on target tumor.

     5. CT Model Type: PHILIPS BRILLIANCE CT BIG BORE/7381
First day of use: April 30, 2010 
Equipped with the moving laser system, the tumor location is simulated with diagnostic X-ray energy (KeV), and high-resolution CT images are captured to locate the tumor and calculate the radiation dosage for computerized treatment planning. Development Points:
Future Development
     a. Standard medical quality: Provide defect-free high-quality radiation therapy and develop the MOSAIQ system.
     b. Considerate five comprehensive care: Devote in providing holistic, family, team and overall care. It is our goal to be
         patient and patient relative centered.
     c. Full support therapy: Avoid and reduce side-effects of radiation therapy, increase patient physical strength and
         design customized support therapy for each individual patient.
     d. Synchronized new therapy: Have innovative new therapies to synchronize with the world. VMAT was installed in
         May 2009. Gamma Knife and TomoTherapy were installed in January and April 2010 respectively.
